(EN) I visited Argiris Rallias’ studio to get a closer look at his latest work, and I found myself standing before “Atzouros.” In Kythnos, Atzouros is the term for the upright stone placed in a threshing floor, but Argiris explained that the word carries another meaning as well: it’s used to describe someone who remains detached, someone who refuses to take a stand.

(GR) Μπήκα στο εργαστήριο του Αργύρη Ραλλιά για να δω από κοντά το νέο του έργο και βρέθηκα μπροστά στον «Άτζουρα». Στην Κύθνο, Άτζουρα λένε την όρθια πέτρα στο αλώνι, αλλά ο Αργύρης μού εξήγησε ότι η λέξη έχει και άλλο νόημα: την χρησιμοποιούν για κάποιον που μένει αμέτοχος, που δεν παίρνει θέση απέναντι σε καταστάσεις.

(EN) As I was filming him work, I watched the way he assembled the materials. Nothing was bought. Even the gears are his own construction—an improvised mechanism that challenged him but gave him the joy of creating something from scratch. The most moving part, however, is the base. He used an old barrel that belonged to his grandfather, which he found discarded in a field. He left it exactly as it was, with the wear of time still on it, to keep the memory alive, filling it with soil and stones brought from Kythnos.

(GR) Όση ώρα τον κατέγραφα να δουλεύει, παρατηρούσα τον τρόπο που συνέδεε τα υλικά. Δεν υπήρχε τίποτα αγορασμένο.  Ακόμα και τα γρανάζια είναι δική του κατασκευή, ένας αυτοσχέδιος μηχανισμός που τον δυσκόλεψε, αλλά του έδωσε τη χαρά της δημιουργίας από το μηδέν. Το πιο συγκινητικό κομμάτι όμως είναι η βάση. Χρησιμοποίησε ένα παλιό βαρέλι που άνηκε στον παππού του, το οποίο βρήκε πεταμένο σε ένα χωράφι. Το άφησε όπως ήταν, με τη φθορά του χρόνου επάνω του, για να κρατήσει ζωντανή την ανάμνηση, και το γέμισε με χώμα και πέτρες που έφερε από την Κύθνο.

(EN) Watching it move, you get the sense that the iron pieces are levitating. Argyris connected them in a way that the work lacks downward weight; it “breathes.” It is a combination of hard metal, stone, and personal history that ultimately makes you stop in front of it and—contrary to its name—take a stand before his art.

(GR) Βλέποντάς το να κινείται, έχεις την αίσθηση ότι τα σίδερα αιωρούνται στον αέρα. Ο Αργύρης τα σύνδεσε έτσι ώστε το έργο να μην έχει βάρος προς τα κάτω, να «αναπνέει». Είναι ένας συνδυασμός σκληρού μετάλλου, πέτρας και προσωπικής ιστορίας που τελικά σε κάνει να σταματάς μπροστά του και, σε αντίθεση με το όνομά του, να παίρνεις θέση απέναντι στην τέχνη του.
